How To Add Sound Effects To Serato (Sampler Slots, Done Properly)

Serato's sampler is the SP-6 panel, and it does exactly one thing well: fire a sound the instant you hit the pad. Here is the setup that makes effects land where you meant them to.

1. Get the files right first

Before Serato is even open:

  • Trimmed to the transient. The waveform must start at the sound, with no dead air in front of it. Leading silence is why an air horn lands behind the beat no matter how well you time it, and it is the single most common fault in free downloads.
  • Trimmed to the transient. The waveform should start at the sound, with no leading silence.
  • Kept in one folder. Make an "FX" crate in Serato so you are not hunting through the main library mid-set.

2. Load the slots

  1. Click SP-6 in the top bar to open the sampler panel.
  2. Drag a sound from your crate onto an empty slot.
  3. Repeat for the handful you actually use — six is plenty.
  4. Save it as a sampler bank so it is still there next time.

3. Set the play mode

Each slot has its own mode, and the default is not the one you want:

  • One Shot — plays the whole sound, retriggers from the top each press. This is the right answer for horns, drops, stabs and rewinds.
  • Hold — plays only while the pad is held. Useful for a siren you want to ride.
  • Loop — for a sustained bed, rarely what you want for an effect.

4. Levels and routing

  • Set the sampler master a few dB below your track level. An effect louder than the music sounds like an accident.
  • Check the output is going to the master, not cue-only — otherwise it will be missing from your recording and from the PA.
  • If you are recording the set, play an effect once during soundcheck and confirm it is in the recording before you rely on it.

5. If you are on Serato DJ Lite

Lite has no SP-6. The practical route is a phone running a soundboard app into a spare channel on the mixer — same effects, no upgrade. SB Audio FX does this and is free.

Where to get the sounds

Every SB Audio FX pack is trimmed to the transient, full sample rate and cleared for commercial use — which is to say, none of the problems in step 1. You can preview every sound before you pay: browse the packs, or read what free packs leave out first.

Frequently asked

How do I add sound effects to Serato?

Open the SP-6 sampler panel in Serato DJ Pro, drag the sound from your library onto an empty sampler slot, set that slot's play mode to One Shot, and set its output to the mix. The pad now fires the effect instantly each time you hit it.

What is the best play mode for DJ sound effects in Serato?

One Shot. Trigger mode retriggers from the start on every press, which is what you want for horns and stabs; Hold mode stops the sound when you release, which is only useful for sirens you want to ride manually.

Why do my sound effects land late in Serato?

Almost always leading silence in the file. Plenty of sound effects — particularly free re-uploads — have a few milliseconds of dead air before the sound itself, so the effect starts fractionally after you hit the pad. Sounds trimmed to the transient fix it.

Can I use sound effects in a recorded Serato mix?

Yes, as long as the sampler output is routed to the master rather than the cue, and the sounds are licensed for commercial use. Anything routed to cue only will be missing from the recording.

Does Serato DJ Lite have a sampler?

No — the SP-6 sampler is a Serato DJ Pro feature. On Lite, run the effects from a phone soundboard app into a spare mixer channel instead.
